History of Matcha
Although it has been routinely stated that Matcha Green Tea Powder first originated in China and was then brought back to Japan, the truth may just be the opposite. Cited as early as the 3rd century A.D., Japanese literature actually mentions that green tea seeds were first brought from Japan to China because it had been used to remedy many ailments. It suggests that nobility from the Tang Dynasty and religious Buddhists used this primarily for medicinal purposes.
Later, in 1191, a Zen Buddhist monk, Eisai returned from China and was accustomed to both enjoying the tea and gaining significant healing capabilities, so he brought the green tea powder back to Japan. He showed them how to mix the powder with hot water, stir and drink. Before too long, the green tea was consumed more for taste than for medicinal reasons. The enjoyment of this tea quickly spread from just the nobility classes down to Samurai classes. It was here that the Samurais developed a ceremony or ritual to foster peace and harmony and a reflection built on calmness.
The Japanese Tea ceremonies began sometime during the 1500’s and centered around the simplicities of life, such as beauty, honor and generosity…..and drinking green tea was an integral part of these rituals. Soon, these practices became a more of a meditative reflection of life and of a person’s inner self.
Matcha green tea powder drinking was quite prevalent in almost every Japanese social level by the sixteenth century. A revered figure, Sen no Rikyu, centered his tea ceremonies on a philosophy that every moment should be treasured since it can never be repeated. His teachings influenced Japanese architecture, gardens and the arts. He preached harmony, respect, purity and tranquility…..and green tea was always present.
